Nissa, Who Shakes the World and Mutate
Mutate is not working with Nissa's animated lands. I put the mutate creature on top of the land, but they are still only 3/3 power toughness. Also I was unable to tap the creature for mana as I should be able to tap the creature land that I mutated onto.
It was actually pointed that all abilities from the creatures under were passed to the creature on top and "It becomes a 0/0 Elemental creature" is an continuous ability.
This is truly a stupid interaction. Whether it is according to rules or not is really shady and stupidly worded ... one would expect some better explanation of this on cards / somewhere online - to be warned.
Lost me a game too and reading how many people lost cause of this makes me sad.
Pretty stupid it wasn't pointed out when Mutate released.
also experiencing the mutate issue where the creature on tops power and toughness are ignored turning my migratory greathorn into a 3/3 instead of a 6/7
I also disagree. For the card to work the way it currently does, the ability on Nissa would have to say the following:
"Put 3 +1/+1 counters on target noncreature land you control. Untap it. It becomes a an elemental creature with 'this creature has power and toughness of 0, vigilance, and haste.'"
Instead it says it's a 0/0 elemental creature. As the power and toughness are not part of the ability it should not translate up when mutated upon.
I don't agree that it is working properly, if you mutate over an amass token it doesn't stay a 0/0 does it? there's nothing in nissa's text to indicate the 0/0 is applying to an ability and not the base power, if it's working as intended then the text needs to be updated to reflect that it's an ability.
Rules advisor here-this is not a bug, just a funky rules interaction. When nissa targets a land, she gives it the characteristic "is a 0/0" in addition to giving it haste and vigilance. When a creature is mutated onto the land (such as gemrazer), the land has a new base power and toughness, which applies before the "is a 0/0" ability applies (this is a simplification, of course).
Being unable to tap the creature for mana is a bug, however.
EDIT: I realized that I made a mistake. You should not be able to tap the creature for mana either. The reason for this is that it's given the ability to tap for mana by the type "forest" (or any other basic land type), but it doesn't have the text "T: add G" itself. When it loses the forest type (such as when it's mutated onto) it loses that ability.
This is still happening as of now, luckily I had a nice opponent who scooped anyways.
This just happened to me, too, and I lost because my Migratory Greathorn and Auspicious Starrix were 3/3s instead of a 6/7 and a 9/9, respectively.
Happened with both Gemrazer, and Auspicious Starrix on a Forest turned into a creature by Nissa's ability
Same issue just now
I have had the same issue.
Also happened to me
It is working properly!
After reading about it, it has to do with the layer rules of MTG.
The ability that creates the creature land says it is a 0/0 creature. So when the mutated creature mutates on top, it Will still be a 0/0 creature, because the Nissa ability is still aplying.
Old post: When mutating Gemrazer over Nissa animated land with 3 counters on it, the resulting creature was a 0/0 with 3 counters instead of a 4/4 with 3 counters. This happened to me 2 times in diferent games (all the times i tryed).
Even mutating the land creature several times on top or above does not help it... remains a 0/0 with counters
In addition to not mutating correctly, it also prevents the land from being tapped for mana
Same issue when mutating a gemrazer onto an animated Nissa land. How is this still a thing? Be a lot cooler if it wasn't.
