Kaldheim card bug Sarulf, Realm Eater triggering ability erroneously when tokens are destroyed
new kaldheim card "Sarulf, Realm Eater" is triggering the ability "
Whenever a permanent an opponent controls is put into a graveyard from the battlefield,..." when tokens are destroyed. in this interaction no permanent enters the graveyard since it is a token, so the ability should not trigger. This has severe implications and is affecting gameplay.
Sarulf is working as intended: Tokens do enter the graveyard and cause any triggers associated with that to happen. However, once there they explode into glitter and cease to exist.
110.5e A token is subject to anything that affects permanents in general or that affects the token’s card type or subtype. (...)
110.5f A token that’s in a zone other than the battlefield ceases to exist. (...) (Note that if a token changes zones, applicable triggered abilities will trigger before the token ceases to exist.)
The last bit means that Sarulf will get his +1/+1 counters because a creature permanent (the token) goes to the GY (triggering Sarulf's ability). THEN the token ceases to exist. Sarulf's ability applies to ANY permanent: Tokens, Enchantments (including Auras), Artifacts (Treasure/Clue/Food tokens, Wayfarer's Bauble, ect), LANDS (including when Myriad Landscape, Flooded Strand, Evolving Wilds et al. are "cracked"). IF his first ability specifically stated "nontoken permanents" then yes, he wouldn't/shouldn't receive a counter when those tokens went to the GY but it doesn't so, working as intended. :p
Playing against an opponent using Sarulf world eater. I may have misspelled that. The car reads that when a permanent an opponent controls enters the graveyard out +1/+1 counter on Sarulf. At start of turn you can remove counters and exile.
The issue was that I was running rats and had dozens of rat tokens on the field. When the tokens died, Sarulf was gaining +1/+1 counters. This shouldn't be the case as tokens don't go to the graveyard. When the game was over Sarulf should have had 3 counters as I had lost two rat swarms and a typhoid rat. Instead he had 10 counters.
Came here to report this behaviour. Sarulf, Realm Eater gained +1 +1 upon death of a token.
Same issue. Token griffin died (tokens are not put into the graveyard), Sarulf received counter. Rinse, repeat. Resulted in erroneous win for opponent.
I just experienced the same issue. It seems to be triggering on "death" or possibly even "deadly damage." The trigger for this ability should fire ONLY when an opponent's permanent moved from the battlefield to any graveyard. If nothing makes it to a graveyard, then the ability should not fire. If something is exiled, the ability should not trigger since exile bypasses the graveyard. A token dying should not add a counter since there's nothing to put in the graveyard.
I was playing limited and my oppenent's Sarulg get counters everytime I did something: crew, casting,... I have 1 card in cementry and it had 7 counters!
I lost the game because of this.
Same issue, player controling sarulf killed a cat token and sarulf got a counter on it, tokens dont go to graveyard so must not trigger it.
I experienced the same issue.
