Algorithm Improvement
I'm sure you're getting a lot of complaints about how one-sided your algorithm is not being impartial and often times screwing over players with land draws that should not be happening in a purely random sample - so my complaint can be added to that pile.
But, an idea for changing the algorithm to improve randomization would be having the program assign a number to each card remaining in a deck and pile shuffling the cards into X amount of piles (let's say 6). It can repeat this process Y amount of times then take the middle of the pile and put those cards on top. A better template would be from the card shuffler for poker sets from stores.

Check my log, at least 8 in a row on the draw for me, too.

I have the same issue. I tracked for a week and I'm on the draw in 71 of the last 100 matches. When being on the play in Bo1 is a 55%+ win rate it's no wonder I can't advance rank this month.

Not even close to random. 15 or so in a row. Sitting here laughing with friends at Oppent goes first over and over and over again

And still, wizard's does not respond or heed customer feedback. Matching algorithm still a terrible way to test decks as they put you up against a predetermined archetype based on your deck. Very upsetting.

I've just played 15 matches of which i was matched against mono-red 13 times. My deck can't handle mono red so that's an instant 13 losses. However if I were to build a deck that counters mono-red I get matched against entirely different teams. So it's a lose no matter what. In order to win my 15 daily matches I have to play ATLEAST 75 matches. Why should I have to spend my ENTIRE day playing magic if I would want to complete my daily rewards? Never in my 30 years of gaming have I seen a matchmaking system as broken as in Magic Arena. If you want me to spend more money on your game, this is absolutely blocking you from getting any

Just to test a theory. I played a set of control decks, and faced nothing but fast agro or other control decks. So I switched to midrange and saw nothing but control, so I switch to agro creature and only face other agro creature decks or creature removal. There is nothing about matchmaking that is random.

This has been going on for a long time in BO1 standard. Today, in the past ten games, my opponent went first 100% of the time. Do you think it's fun to lose three games in a row and to see on your screen, yet again, "Opponent goes first."? Here's what it looks like, I'll give you some screenshots. Is there a chance you could make the user experience more balanced? Some kind of failsafe--after three losses, match the user in such a way that they can go first. *&$^ it would be a ^$&% improvement if we saw that after five losses. Instead, we just keep playing as if it's impossible for the matchmaker to match us in such a way as to give us closer to 50% go-first gameplay. I swear this game is stacking everything it can against me.

You really need to do something about your matchmaking. I don't know if it's ignoring deck win rates, or if it's ignoring deck contents or if it doesn't care that certain decks are in the Top 8 list.
If you keep placing starter decks with a few funky cards against Top 8 control decks people will just leave the game. The only reason I'm still playing is because of the Covid lockdown.
Fix it!

Looks like today's patch addressed this issue.
Goodbye coins, though xD

I was caught by this issue too. I'm bronze and my opponent war mythic #1129,
I was overwhelmed by his/her experience and deck building. -
brazenwolfy#80400 commented
What is wrong with matchmaking in Premiere? I started at Bronze one and my first three opponents were Mythic #201, Diamond, and high gold.
Is matchmaking going purely by Win/Loss, or is it just broken?

In 90% of my games I draw only mana or never draw mana meanwhile opponents draw perfect cards to win game. Especially players that have very large decks somehow get perfect hands and draws.
fix your algorithms.

check my logs. I have gone at least 7 matches in a row with the opponent starting first. Last night, I don't even know how many it was. It's not random. Not even close. It falls WAY outside standard deviation allowed for the curve. Please look at the log and tell me how many games I went first and how many my opponent has.

Player matching algorithm is not matching randomly.
Question: When will you have an Arena format that matches truly randomly? Why are certain deck matchings not allowed? -
ogamespec#46796 commented
Why my opponent 95% goes first?
Fix this issue (started to affect few days ago).
Very annoying.

What good is a matching algorithm if you can't test your decks against random opponents?
I began tracking matches last Sunday. I played a mono blue deck, and kept a record of the deck types I played against. I played 50 consecutive matches, and saw 29 deck types, mostly fast creature decks.
The following day I played an Orzhov control deck. My first 3 games saw all control decks, none of which made the list of 29 on Sunday. Statistically, that's a 0% probability.
Question: How does Wizards propose we test decks, if the matching algorithm is so controlling that we literally won't see opponents of a certain deck type (unless of course, we switch decks, defeating the purpose) which we could face in a real-life tournament? -

The past few days I noticed a massive discrepancy in turn order. As I started counting 9 of 11 games I played I was on the draw. Bad coin flips I thought. Now every day since I've still gotten insanely bad turn order and so I started conceding games in casual just to test how many times I got 1st vs 2nd. 13 draws 0 plays. That's not variance, it's rigging.
