Paper Magic on the decline
Magic TCG is dying. I own a store and my customer base is increasingly stating they are fed up with MTG and the way the paper game has progressed due to the actions of WoTC. There are too many products coming out. There is no support for higher end competitive players. There is no Pro circuit anymore - what there is and/or has been recently is a joke. There is no path to becoming a pro level player. There is no ranking in the community anymore. There are no officials held to the standards of anyone at WoTC anymore - WoTC doesnt even take care of their own judging anymore. Card sets are unbalanced, banning are apparently just planned as they dont research a card sufficiently before making it (i.i "We didnt even look at" how this card affects the modern format. Formats themselves are unbalanced and frequently damaged by new cards regularly, demanding more bans. They don't appear to be looking at the state of the game they make. They appear to ONLY be chasing the sales rather than making a good product people enjoy. They cut out the LGS by going direct to consumer with collectables. The LGS's got them to where they are and that is where the players and buyers link to them - but they repeatedly hurt the LGS business model with their decisions. WoTC just doesnt seem to care about the game anymore. When new players come to me and my store I am inclined to steer them to another product now. Flesh and Blood is the next best alternative, though there are others, that more seem to pay attention to what they are creating.
I have been a loyal patron of WoTC from the beginning of MTG. Sadly, I think it may be time to put the old dog down. It looks like the majority of my 300+ local players are feeling the same.
