Had Solphim out, and an invasion of Tarkir on the board with 5 counters on it. Cast Lightning Bolt on the invasion on my opponent's turn. Solphim says doubles non-combat damage from sources you control but only dealt 3 damage instead of 5 to the invasion.

It doubles noncombat damage to an opponent or a permanent he controls. The battle may be defended by him, but YOU control it, so Solphim doesn't apply to damage to it.
