Flavor texts on Japanese cards are typeset in a same font as rules texts
Some cards (i.e., vanillas) have no rules texts on it. Although MTG Arena usually omits cards' flavor texts from their text boxes, vanillas show their flavor texts on them in MTG Arena. That's fine.
The problem is that, on Japanese cards, rules texts and flavor texts are typeset in the same way using an identical font in MTG Arena, and it is often difficult to recognize whether texts in a text box are rules texts or flavor texts, especially if you see an unfamiliar card played by your opponent in a game.
Note that English MTG Arena cards use a roman (non-itallic) font for rules texts and an itallic font for flavor texts, so they are just fine. Paper-printed Japanese cards also use distinctive fonts (a standard sans-serif font for rules texts and a script font for flavor texts), and they are also easy to recognize. Only Japanese cards on MTG Arena have the problem.
As a result, Japanese-speaking digital-only Magic players (like me :) are handicapped in play in early days after introduction of a new set.
Several different fixes are possible for this bug. They are (in the order of my personal preferences):
- Use distinctive Japanese fonts for rules texts and flavor texts under Japanese locale (hopefully using similar fonts to paper-printed Japanese cards.)
- Completely omit flavor texts even on vanilla cards.
- Typeset rules texts and flavor texts using identical fonts in all languages (to make an equal playing environment).
Steps to reproduce the bug
- Run MTG Arena under the Jaspanese Locale (Adjust Options > Graphics > Locale > 日本語 (Japanese). You may need to exit and restart the game for the change to take effect.)
- As an example, find the two cards, 飢えし暴君、カラクシオン (Kalakscion, Hunger Tyrant) and 不屈の木人 (Wickerfolk Indomitable) in your collection, hover your mouse over each card, and compare their look.
Platform
PC (Windows 11 Pro 23H2 build 22631.4890)
Actual results
The text boxes of the two example cards look similar, and you would not know which one is a rules text until you read and understand the text and judge whether it is suitable for a rules text.
Expected results
The text boxes look clearly different before reading their contents.
Relevant screenshots/videos
See the attachment image compiled from two screenshots to emphasize the bug.
One card showing a rules text and another showing a flavor text look similar before reading and understanding the text contents.
Workaround
I don't know any (except for never playing in Japanese locale).
