Splash portal an Etali from Etali draw gave the Etali to opposing player.
I played an Etali, it drew a splash portal which I used on Etali and somehow it returned to the board not in my control but in opponent control.

Was the Etali a card that you got from your opponent's deck, such as with Thief of Sanity, Gonti, Outrageous Robbery, or some other effect that allows you to play your opponent's cards? If so, spells like Splash Portal that exile the target creature then return it to the battlefield under it's owner's control will do exactly as you describe: since your opponent "owns" the card, it will return under their control instead of yours.
