Of course it has to resolve in order to do its thing. There is no cast trigger on AotSS. Checking the if-condition is part of the effect of the spell, and based on the result of that check things happen, during resolution.

Did you have the 2nd casting countered? The 2nd casting must resolve in order for the win condition to take place. See the rulings https://gatherer.wizards.com/AKH/en-us/4/approach-of-the-second-sun I agree that the legacy wording is inaccurate on the card itself since it doesn't mention the 2nd one must resolve--only cast from hand.
