I activated the land and attacked. On attack, it did not allow me to target the opponent, and instead, it auto targeted myself to mill the cards.

Which means, the opponent was an illegal target, so you were the only possible choice. Many cards give an opponent hexproof, like Shalai, or Crystal Barricade.
