Sounds like your opponent had their Najal, the Storm Runner out. Najal has the ability "you may cast sorcery spells as though they had flash."

Did your opponent have out anything that makes their opponent's dying creatures exile instead? Like Etching of Kumano or Misery's Shadow?

Card styles have always been not just for a specific card, but for a specific card from a specific set. You can always tell which set it is from the set symbol on the card.
You do not get "duplicate protection" for having 4 copies of an older version of a card when it comes out in a new set because that is a new card.

Did your opponent have Kutzil, Malamet Exemplar on the battlefield? Because it sounds like they did.
A real easy way to help give more details is to take screenshots. Take them of the entire game screen. Be sure to get one of the entire battlefield. If any cards in the graveyard might be relevant, then get screenshots of everything in whatever graveyard those cards are in. Same for cards sent to exile.
