Milling has always been part of magic, if you have been playing for 20+ years you know that UW control has always revolved around howling mine, mill and grindstone as a mechanic to chew away your deck over time and stall you out until you over draw.
I find the modern mill mechanic is over the top at this point, and it started in Ravnica with glimpse and storm as a mechanic to win fast with. I always found the idea of 2 mana for 1/6th of a deck in the bin to be excessive.
The only major difference is now there is so much access to the graveyard compared to then its as if its a second hand. The only mill decks I find to be really difficult are the ones that surround themselves around ashiok and exile the cards as well.
I just play bo3 at this point and have gaeas blessing as a SB option. I also dont really run into a lot of mill decks outside bo1 because they know they can only win on a surprise play rather than calculated play.
