I've had a similar issue, and it cost me a game in Premier Draft. I want a refund. In my case, I had the card with offspring on the battlefield, and both creatures worked fine. At the end of one of my opponent's turns, I was able to activate the token's ability, but not the original card's ability. Immediately after activating the token's ability, their turn ended, not allowing me to try again. Because of the creature being 5/5 instead of 6/6 later on, it died to a combat trick and I lost the race.
