Did you select X = 8 or 0? It sounds like you chose 0 thinking that the cost reduction from Apparatus would make up the 8.

That is not what should happen. The second Greenshell is a copy of the first, but its a 1/1. It still has its enter ability.

You can put any creature type you want when prompted, Arena will fill the list with creature types in your deck but you are not limited to them
