    The way the ability is worded, you always need to choose a target. It's a bit confusing, but the way to accomplish what you wanted is to select the opponent's creature, then choose the 'Decline' option.

    Molderhulk returns a land, not a creature. It only cares about creatures in the graveyard since they reduce its casting cost.
