WOTC, please clarify. Exalted is a counter but a counter that can’t be affected by other cards including Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider).

When is a counter not a counter?

Yes, I would like to get achievement badges for various plays, combos, “bad beats,” and so forth. Plus the bonuses mentioned above. The lack of development of this game is so obvious that you wonder if WOTC cares and if they just will kill it at some point. The problem with this kind of “free” achievement stuff is that it is free, and WOTC clearly (from its behavior) only cares about monetization (spending the least amount of money to gain the most money).

    Two requests:

    1. WOTC: Please stop deleting posts here. Why? Because the person who gets their posts deleted reposts, and I’m tired of getting spam email from this discussion for a petition I will never sign. Besides, a petition your company will never act upon anyway is quite harmless in the big scheme of things. Think for once.

    2. Players: If you want change, hit WOTC where it hurts. Go F2P like I do, have fun with Brawl in Arena, play paper IRL, but don’t spend any money on Arena until we get the change we want. BOYCOTT ARENA (spending).

Indeed. Why would the app be “better” than shuffling in paper Magic? I mean, paper Magic doesn’t need hand smoothing. Well, certainly, the motivation can’t be to make digital better than paper; why kill your sacred cow?

Rather, we have to remember that this is a free game. How, then, do you drive players to spend money? Answer: Cause frustration. World of Tanks uses this model, keeping your win rate around 50% by putting you with weak teammates, or fixing the matchmaking so you go up against stronger opponents. Sure, there are cosmetics, but these don’t improve the gameplay experience.

Similarly, with Arena, the algos seem designed to have this frustration effect. My guess is that they are designed to make you think that, because I am losing, I should spend more money to acquire more and better cards - which has ALWAYS been core to Magic.

In a sense then, Arena is an unsolvable conundrum: how to create a free game to rival Hearthstone and the like, but remain true to Magic’s core guiding principle of getting players to chase cards?

WOTC had to pick one or the other. And when it comes to WOTC, they will always choose making money, even if it makes the player experience on Arena a horror show. They will never change the algos, because first they’d have to admit that the algos were terrible or designed to frustrate players by “equalizing the playing field.” But more than that, making money is core to Magic, and Arena, like similar games, is designed to prey on human weaknesses to get you to spend money.

Arena is like a slot machine, with flashy digital bells and whistles, designed to keep you chasing that high of winning by pumping in an endless stream of money. The trick is to get people to spend more money thinking that will change the outcome, when it doesn’t. It’s an endless, greedy loop.

Arena could be a way for Wizards to increase their income on the same IP. In fact, it could effectively double it, in the sense that if all paper players also bought the exact same cards on Arena, Wizards could get those players to buy their cards twice. However, the way the Arena app is, I’m left with the impression that Wizards doesn’t want Arena to supplant paper play, its money maker.

This conflict is evident in every unfixed problem with this app and the complete lack of Arena community outreach, either here or on the official Arena forums. The ending of the Pro league and an e-sports presence also may be linked to this lack of commitment to electronic play.

At the same time, Arena also makes Magic more accessible to more players, many of whom are not bought into the tropes of the game, and therefore who raise uncomfortable criticisms that the core design team may not want to face, or worse, never even thought of facing to begin with.

All of this adds up to a terrible, unloved app, which Wizards would be be better off killing outright before taking more reputational hits to both its app development side and its core product.

In other words, Wizards, if you aren’t going to make this app what it could be, then stop torturing us and just admit that you aren’t Blizzard and go back to focusing on paper Magic. That said, Wizards has never seemed capable of looking into a Mirror Shield — which is ironic given the mirrored exterior of its HQ building; the lack of transparency and self-reflection is literally built into its very own workspace.

In any case, you would be better off working out licensing arrangements for paper sets, as you have started to do. Such things have kept Monopoly alive for 86 years. Similar for Lego. But at least the Lego video games and movies are fun and problem free.

Is it a bug? Or is it a term like “counter” that Wizards has had 30 years to figure out but causes confusion? Who knows with this game.

That is correct per this rule (second sentence):

711.4c While a transforming double-faced permanent has its back face up, it has only the characteristics of its back face. However, its mana value is calculated using the mana cost of its front face.

    Not according to the rules:

711.4a While a double-faced card is outside the game or in a zone other than the battlefield or stack, it has only the characteristics of its front face.

Exile is such a zone. The card’s default facing “off the battlefield” is the front side.

I have found this rule correctly done in Arena for the double-faced cards I play (although it isn’t always to my liking, and so I agree with you in spirit).

Faceless Haven is (or can be) all creature types, which includes Angels.

    Gotta love Magic!

I can never tell from these reports if it’s Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider doing this, or a bug. Who knows with Arena?
