Performance has greatly improved since the patch on 7/28. Animated sleeves not longer drag down the FPS to an unplayable state. However, playing above Low graphics settings (at least on my 2019 Macbook Pro) does cause the game to become unplayable due to bad FPS and poor performance. This is especially true when drafting from a spellbook with the book animation running in the background.

Thank you Arena team for addressing this issue and getting Mac players back to a playable state.

This still hasn't been fixed in the HBG release. The game is not performant and is very laggy when animated sleeves are being used by either player.

The 2022.16.50 release has still not addressed or solved this performance issue.

To test, play with an animated sleeve on your deck against Sparky. The SNC family sleeves with the parallax wave, the nation flags with the parallax wave, or the Mu Yanling animated sleeves are especially bad and make the game unplayable. There are animated sleeves which aren't as bad as those, but they still greatly impact the client's performance.

Play another games against Sparky, in the queue, or the ladder without sleeves or a static image sleeve and at least on my Mac (MacBook Pro 2019, 2.3 GHz 8-core, 32 GB ram 2400 MHz DDR4), the game is mostly playable (unless your opponent has one of the animated sleeves mentioned above).

I think I have a solid theory as to what's happening with poor performance on Mac.

Inspired by a post this morning in the Arena subreddit about certain sleeves causing in-game performance issues, I devised some tests.

I played several games with and without animated sleeves. And it didn't matter the animated sleeve, just as long as I had a sleeve with an animation on my deck, my in-game performance was awful. When I played a game without sleeves or a sleeve with a static picture, the performance was great and very playable. I'm also keeping my graphics quality level at low for the time being.

I played some games in the Historic Brawl queue with static sleeves on my cards until I played against an opponent with animated sleeves. And the performance decreased. It's not unplayable, but still very bad.

My guess is that the process that renders the sleeves in game is bugged or is running away with system resources. I think this is the case because Arena runs very well right until you see the "vs" screen and the match begins.

You can even test this against Sparky. I found the same results there. Nearly unplayable with animated sleeves and normal performance without animated sleeves. My advice for the time being is to play without animated sleeves as you'll likely get a performant client if your opponent is also not using animated sleeves.
