An error occurred while saving the comment Zerg#44808 commentedAs you mentioned, pure greed was probably an incentive. Some number-crunching executives predicted this will result in more gem expenditures. However there is another plausible explanation.
Perhaps they simply wanted to copy mechanics found other games such as hearthstone, without thinking through the consequences. That game reportedly re-balances cards to the annoyance of the players there, making it a common complaint. But, at least in copying other games they have made mtga players aware of the competition's existence.

An error occurred while saving the comment Zerg#44808 commentedRe-balancing cards is a bad idea. I don't want established cards to change. Now I have no confidence in crafting anything or in any permanence towards future deck plans. I also liked several of the cards they destroyed, and now it just leaves a discontented feeling when seeing them.
It's not the end of the world of course, this is only a game. However I'm not motivated to spend any more money on gems now.
Seconded, roll it back to before the update.
