One for one mana in an artifact does not break any math rules for magic. Sets the base line. One land, or artifact.. one for one by mana standards vs physical card. Even, not broken. that is why it comes into play tapped. what about 4 blue mana spell.. instant.. target player can't draw cards this turn... you instead draw those cards, if drawing is made to happen. your deck, not theirs. just draw, not steal their deck.

Tom Sawyer card. or "Paint the Fence'. Tap target creature until this creature untaps? Like giant oyster from old? Or an "x" spell.. tap target creature for "x" turns.. counters to be put on. Or "remove" another creatures ability for a turn. Too busy Painting the fence, LOL> Goblin Painter.. all cards are one color. ooppss he spilled.

"Basalt Monolith" coming back to arena? 3 colorless artifact that taps for 3 colorless mana. Refills for 3 mana. Is there a "lotus" anything artifact? 1 for 1 exchange? One mana to cast, comes into play tapped. Tap to sack for a single mana.. colorless or colored? either or too powerful as a color? or not tapped. Just a 1 to 1 ratio artifact.

ANY ability or spell or magic function that brings ANYTHING into play for free... is bad.. or abusable. Cost even minor, is important to expand the numbers... slow the game from quick kills, and extends the long game to a more viable options. Requires complexity if there's a cost. Even just one mana.

what about a "unlock" treasure box/chest card.... plays down as a unmovable box... 3 or 4 things to "unlock" it. "jack in a box" style. takes 5 damage and turns into a 5 creature.. per mana. or 1 of each instant, sorcery, summon, artifact, enchantment are played and it opens. 5 instants... or sac 5 creatures to it. Artifact box... indestructible. Or it's in the middle... each player can fight for it? Location based "extra's" on the screen to fight for. Takes an attacking creature to get to it.? Not just a planes walker or player to attack... "other things" on the screen?
