Opponent had no demons in play, but continued to gain life and drain my life at the end of each of their turns. They had unlocked the second half but I had countered the effect with detect intrusion.

Similar thing happened to me. No demons, I had killed both. They only had slivers and some artifacts on the board.
Edit: While Firdoch Core is a shapeshifter, it should not count as a demon unless it is a creature. How can a permanent be a creature type if it is not currently a creature?
