A Proposal for Separating Universes Beyond from Traditional Magic: The Gathering
I am writing to propose a solution to one of the biggest concerns surrounding the growing presence of Universes Beyond (UB) in Magic: The Gathering.
My proposal is simple: Make Universes Beyond its own officially supported format, separate from traditional Magic.
I am not asking Wizards to stop producing UB products. I recognize their commercial success and their ability to attract new players. However, I believe their increasing integration into every aspect of Magic risks diluting the identity of a game that has spent over 30 years building its own universe.
1. Create two officially supported formats
Traditional Magic (Original MTG)
- Only cards from Magic's original intellectual property are legal.
- Preserve original planes, characters, stories, and lore.
- Maintain a competitive environment focused exclusively on the Magic universe.
- Continue investing in original Magic sets and characters.
Universes Beyond (UB)
- All licensed franchises are welcome (Final Fantasy, Lord of the Rings, Marvel, Fallout, etc.).
- Create a dedicated competitive format and tournament ecosystem.
- Allow original Magic cards to be played alongside UB cards.
- Continue expanding partnerships and crossover products without restrictions.
2. Apply the same principle to Commander
Offer three options:
- Traditional Commander: Original Magic cards only.
- UB Commander: UB cards allowed alongside original Magic cards.
- Regular Commander: Existing rules remain unchanged for players who enjoy mixing everything.
3. Why this benefits everyone
- Protects Magic's identity: Preserves the original universe, lore, characters, and visual identity.
- Respects longtime players: Gives players who supported Magic for decades an environment that remains true to what they love.
- Supports new players: Allows crossover fans to enjoy their favourite franchises through Magic.
- Protects revenue: Wizards can continue selling UB products without alienating traditional players.
- Creates player choice: Nobody is forced to participate in an environment they don't enjoy.
- Strengthens local communities: Stores and tournament organizers can support both audiences.
4. The fundamental principle
Universes Beyond should expand Magic, not redefine what Magic is.
Magic has an incredibly rich original universe that deserves its own identity and continued investment. Characters like Jace, Chandra, Liliana, Nicol Bolas, and the Phyrexians should not become secondary to the external franchises being licensed.
There is room for both products to coexist successfully, but they should not have to compete for the identity of the same game.
I am not asking you to stop making Universes Beyond. I am asking you to give traditional Magic its own protected competitive environment.
This is an opportunity to preserve the legacy of Magic while allowing Universes Beyond to flourish independently.
I hope Wizards will seriously consider this proposal as part of its long-term product and format strategy.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best regards,
A longtime Magic: The Gathering player
