I just had this same issue in the current midweek magic event. My opponent cast 3 red pips worth of spells (4 mana total) with only 3 lands. It was turn 3 and they had no effects that allowed them to spend as another color, nor treasure tokens or ANYTHING else like that.

I just had this same issue. Opponent cast a red/black spell with no source of black mana
