Simultaneous Combat Damage
When combat damage is assigned and performed, if i have less than zero health but the death of a creature causes me to gain life then I would be above zero so I believe I should still be alive and the game did not allow for this to occur.

No, you are wrong. Triggers canot save you. Because triggers have to go on the stack, and resolve, before they do anything to gain you life. Until then, state based actions are checked at least twice and see you dead. One: right after combat damage. Two: right after the trigger is put on the stack.
But lifelink can save you, because that lifegain happens as a result of damage, and thus before state based actions are checked.
