Mana Drain
If the mana drain spell fails to counter a spell, should the casting player still receive the mana of the spell that it failed to counter? I played a creature card protected by Cavern of Souls, and my opponent played Mana Drain. The counter failed but he still received the mana as if the counter had occurred.

The targeted spell was not an illegal target. Failing to counter that spell has no influence on the next instruction of Mana Drain, which is not depening on the spell actually getting countered. It will set up a delayed trigger that gives mana equal to the spell's mana cost. So not a bug, all as it should be.
