Official Complaint: Rule logic error, ban request, and anti-stalling mechanics for "You cannot lose" effects
Hello,
I am writing to officially file a complaint regarding a major logical flaw, game balance issues, and severe game-stalling on MTG Arena. I have been playing Magic: The Gathering since the release of the Kaladesh set in 2016. Throughout all these years, I have never really had a major issue with the rules system. Even though I strongly disagree with some recent design choices—like the broken Earthbending mechanic that should have never existed, or the toxic Landfall triggers from Chocobo and Tifa—I always kept playing. However, Wizards urgently needs to address the current state of competitive fair play and stalling decks.
One of the oldest rules I used to find relatively funny and fair was the immunity provided by cards like Platinum Angel. Creatures like that were powerful but perfectly balanced because they were easily targetable and answerable by any standard deck. Lately, however, you have been releasing cards that allow players to completely abuse your own game rules, and it feels like the design team does not even realize it.
I just lost a 30-minute match on MTG Arena where I completely dominated. Looking objectively at the game state, I had technically won the game 53 times over through poison counters, my opponent (neurovis) was at nearly -74,000 life, and they had also naturally lost through an empty library. Yet, I lost to a deck-out due to the combo between "The Book of Exalted Deeds" and "Mutavault".
As with any game rule, we must rely on how the text is written. In this case, there is a specific syntax to address. The phrase "You cannot lose" is clear, but following a logic of game balance, it is written in the singular. This should mean that the protection applies to only a single loss condition valid and kept valid upon happening first.
Furthermore, to prevent abuse of this mechanic, we must address the "Godlike mode" it creates. This power is acceptable and stays in the spirit of the game when applied to high-mana cost cards that require being secured by a difficult combo. However, allowing a single card to prevent a player from losing while blocking an opponent from winning on an un-interactable land is broken. Instead of a total, instant, and permanent "Godlike mode," we need to find an alternative. To remain fair, this immunity should only allow protection from being defeated by a specific game rule. The "you cannot lose" condition should be modified to only apply to a single specific loss condition valid and kept valid upon happening first, rather than granting absolute immunity against poison and deck-out simultaneously on an un-interactable land.
Additionally, MTG Arena urgently needs a technical draw mechanic inspired by chess. In chess, if players reach a deadlock or a position is repeated multiple times, a draw is enforced. In my match, the opponent was totally incapable of playing any cards or interacting for half an hour. If a player skips turns due to a total incapacity to act, the game should force a technical draw or force the player to actively spend mana to use the Mutavault ability and turn it back into a creature to prove they can still legally engage in gameplay. Finally, there is a fundamental logical error in how The Book of Exalted Deeds loss exemption is applied, especially regarding word-for-word management. The Book of Exalted Deeds explicitly states to put a counter on a target Angel. While Mutavault temporarily becomes an Angel creature, it completely loses its creature status at the end of the turn. Logically, since it is no longer an Angel or even a creature, the enlightenment counter and its static immunity ability should immediately fall off and stop applying.
I request that Wizards of the Coast reviews this interaction, modifies the mechanic to prevent absolute multi-loss immunity, and implements chess-like anti-stall draw rules. I have attached my match screenshot as proof of this absurd situation.
Regards,Sarminia
Footnotes & Technical References:
See Rule 122.1a: Counters remain on a permanent even if its types change. This allows the enlightenment counter to sit on a non-creature land, which is acceptable.
Contesting Rule 611.2c: While current rules state that continuous effects with no stated duration last indefinitely, the text of The Book of Exalted Deeds specifically requires an Angel target. The duration of this immunity should logically be tied to that type restriction. Once the land stops being an Angel, the continuous effect should be considered expired.
Precedent Ban: Wizards of the Coast previously recognized the toxic and un-interactive nature of this exact interaction by banning The Book of Exalted Deeds in the Standard 2022 format on MTG Arena due to its combination with Faceless Haven.
