To the MTG Arena Development Team,
I have been an active, daily player of MTG Arena for over four years. I am writing to express my profound frustration and to file a formal complaint regarding serious concerns about matchmaking integrity, card shuffling and distribution, and the prevalence of suspected automated accounts across Standard, Best-of-Three (BO3), and competitive events.
1. The Influx of Unnatural, Scripted Opponents
Across all ranks, from Bronze to Mythic, and at virtually every hour of the day, I repeatedly encounter accounts exhibiting highly suspicious, seemingly non-human behavior: identical or near-identical decklists, virtually no discernible misplays, and seemingly flawless curve-outs and topdecks, match after match.
Whether these are unauthorized third-party farming bots or some other form of automated accounts, their presence fundamentally undermines the integrity of the game. Players should not have to question whether they are competing against another human being or an automated script.
2. Matchmaking and Shuffling That Feel Manipulated
The frequency of seemingly one-sided outcomes has become increasingly difficult to accept as ordinary variance. Far too often, one player experiences severe mana ***** or mana flood while the opponent consistently receives an almost perfect curve and seemingly ideal topdecks.
For players who have invested thousands of games over several years, these recurring patterns raise serious questions about the fairness and integrity of the system.
Whether intentional or not, the perception that match outcomes may be influenced by factors beyond player skill and genuine randomness is severely damaging to player trust.
This is not what Magic: The Gathering should represent. It should be a competitive game where strategy, decision-making, and natural variance determine the outcome, not a system that appears to prioritize engagement metrics over fair competition.
3. Driving Away Newcomers and Long-Time Veterans Alike
When genuine strategic gameplay is overshadowed by repetitive, seemingly scripted blowouts, players inevitably lose interest and walk away.
The game increasingly feels devoid of genuine human interaction, creating the impression that the competitive environment is being sustained by automated activity rather than a healthy, engaged player community.
This is damaging not only to long-time veterans but also to newcomers who deserve a fair and enjoyable introduction to the game.
I Demand the Following Actions:
- A comprehensive investigation into suspected automated and scripted accounts across all formats, followed by decisive enforcement action, including bans against accounts confirmed to be violating the rules.
- Full transparency regarding matchmaking, shuffling, and opening-hand algorithms. Specifically, I demand a clear explanation of any hand-smoothing procedures, hidden weighting, or other algorithmic adjustments, including exactly which formats they apply to and whether any engagement-based mechanisms can influence match outcomes or card distribution.
- A firm commitment to preserving the fundamental integrity of Magic: The Gathering, ensuring that matches are decided by player skill, strategic decisions, and genuine randomness rather than undisclosed algorithmic intervention.
If these systemic concerns continue to be ignored, I will withdraw all financial support for MTG Arena and continue raising these issues publicly across international player communities.
After more than four years of daily participation, I believe I have every right to demand accountability, transparency, and meaningful structural changes.
We deserve an honest, specific response, not silence or generic assurances.
Sincerely,
A Long-Time MTG Arena Player from Japan
