Displeasure with Historic Format on MTG Arena
When Historic was first implemented as a queue in MTG Arena, it was advertised as a format where players could continue to use their cards once they rotated out of standard and not loose access to them. At first this sounded great but as time went on and more cards were added, I noticed there was a problem with how the format was being handled. When the Historic Anthologies were introduced, some problematic cards emerged that started to warp the format (ex. Phryexian Obliterator). Over time more sets were added to Arena and I thought things were getting more balanced. It wasn't until Strixhaven arrived and the Mystical Archives were introduced that the format got to a point that it started to feel really degenerate to play. The spells that were introduced in the Mystical Archives made Historic unplayable in my opinion because all the control decks got the tools they needed and the creature based decks suffered to the point that they were no longer viable. Those spells made Historic so unbalanced that I refused to play it anymore.
I previously asked that you consider banning some or all of the Mystical Archives as I thought they were too powerful and with the suspension of Brainstorm, I thought that the game was moving in the right direction that would help rebalance the format, However, I was quickly proven wrong when Jumpstart Historic Horizons was announced as a set that would include over 700 cards of which 31 are exclusive to MTG Arena. It is quickly becoming apparent that Historic is being used as a dumping ground to add anything and everything to the format on a whim without much consideration how those changes would affect the format.
I have no doubt that once Historic Horizons arrives the format is going to become so warped that it is going to cater to a specific subset of players who can take advantage of it. There are already so many combo decks and control decks in the format that are viable and can win out of nowhere and I am sure that more are going to emerge from this mega infusion of cards despite the fact that this set is supposed to be more "creature focused".
I got into Magic Arena because I thought it would help me become a better player. I got into Historic because I thought there were more deckbuilding options available than standard and the cards didn't rotate out. But seeing how Historic has evolved in the last few months, it is becoming quickly apparent that I no longer want to play it. Besides the powerful cards, the matchmaking algorithm seems completely arbitrary as to what I will face to the point that the game will only allow me to win or lose based on what the game decides to match me up against. It doesn't matter how well I play or how well I construct my decks, if the game wants me to lose, then it will match me up against decks that will guarantee that I will lose and vice versa.
I don't expect to be playing Historic in the near future as the format seems to be a futile effort where I waste too much time playing it with very little success.
