Goodbye MTG
Dear WoTC,
I do not expect you to read this or to care, but I need to get these thoughts out for my mental health, and maybe, just maybe, they might impact you as developers and game designers. I have played MTG since it was first released, over the years I have taken extended breaks as I grew up and no longer had friends to play paper with. When Arena first released I was really excited to be able to play again in a more casual manner. Long story short, it has been the most tilting experience I have ever had these last several years, and has completely ruined my love for the game. I have decided to step away completely and not play anymore or spend any more money. The users experience seems to have been thrown to the side with hands thrown up blaming everything on "variance". I have been on both sides of it and it sucks either way. It becomes even worse when your money is involved having to buy in game currency just to even participate regularly. There is no excuse to have "non-games". Many other games have found a way to address the issues, and while I don't expect you to fundamentally change your game to fix it, there has really has been nothing to do to help alleviate a poor experience. The pay out rates on the events are terrible so much that if you even do slightly above average you still do not break even. Couple that with the fact that the match maker always seems to pair you up in mirror matches or you constantly run into the same bombs and its just aggravating. I never have this much tilt playing with friends, but it becomes very frustrating when I have to spend money not to enjoy the game. I know I am not the only one that feels this way, and I also know that most people don't care either because it's all part of the game. Regardless it doesn't change how I feel. While I am truly sad to part from a game I have loved more than any other my entire life, it is in fact just a game, but I certainly will not be spending any more money just to end up frustrated and angry. I know none of this matters and is a heated topic, but I need to get it out.
Goodbye
