It gets +1/+1 counters just from a player playing the game normally. Just play a spell of a color other than green. Turns out you don't even have to go out of your way to do so.

This is enough reason to say that the card should have never been printed and that the only way to fix this problem is to ban it along with the dozens of other cards that made into the past three or four blocks that all should never have been printed.

Do your job Wizards of the Coast, starting banning more cards so that standard can be fun again instead of a mess just a bunch of intentionally broken cards that look like they were designed by twelve year old who got the mtg card editor program.
