Selvala, Heart of The Wilds Big Mana Interface Fix
Selvala, Heart of the Wilds is a staple for mono-green combo decks. I have recently been playtesting a Selvala brawl decklist that is entirely combo oriented, with big mana payoffs being the goal. However, this means tapping Selvala for mana a consistently large amount of times. In doing so, I have noticed a few issues with the Selvala mana production interface that I think need to be addressed.
First off, the interface for tapping her for any amount less than 6 works just fine. It is fast, simple, and in my mono-green list allows me to quickly add all of my needed color. However, as soon as you tap her for 6 or more mana, a completely different ui pops up, where it auto assigns the mana she would produce spread out among all 5 colors. Typically putting any excess in the color of white. This means that to add my necessary 6 green mana, I first have to subtract all of the 4 other colors and then add that mana back into the green column. This may not sound like much, but on combo turns using an untapper such as Staff of Domination, this becomes a miserable and time consuming process that has cost me a game on more than one occasion, with my win in hand, just because I had to use this arduous process to build up the critical mass of mana I needed to win. I would consider myself to be about as fast as any person can be in the clicking process to make these combo's happen as well.
So how do we fix this without overhauling all of Selvala's interactions? I believe there are two ways that this issue could be somewhat simply resolved.
- The first is to make Selvala's mana split evenly between each of the registered colors in your deck. So in Kinnan, tapping her for 6 would make 3 blue and 3 green. If this is an unavailable option then remembering previous preferences of mana splitting would be next. If a player previously assigned all of Selvala's 10 mana into Green, remember that preference and auto assign green for the next activation.
- The second would be a minor change to her 6+ UI, and can be done in 2 ways. First, instead of auto assigning mana at all, just create a pool and allow the player to make the assignments of mana themselves. Second, add in functionality to the up arrows that add mana to a color column to be active at all times, and if the add arrow is selected it removes mana from other colors and adds it into the selected column. So If I tap Selvala for 6, she auto assigns 2 W, 1 U, 1 B, 1 R, and 1G. If i click the add arrow above the green column it should remove a white and add one to green. Click it again and it removes the last white then adds a green. Continuing down the color wheel.
I know this was a lot but I am a very passionate Mono Green player, and this is the only thing holding back Selvala in the current Brawl format.
TL:DR: Selvala, Heart of the Wilds current interface for adding big mana is slow and clunky. It costs a lot of time and should be updated to create a more streamlined UI. I presented a few ideas such as remembering preferences of colors selected and adjusting the functionality of some of the UI buttons to make her play faster and more smoothly.
