A creature with trample can't trample over a creature with protection
A 2/2 with trample can't assign 1 damage to a player and 1 damage to a creature with protection. Only 2 to the creature is allowed. See video: https://youtu.be/G1A87bB98P8

I am having this issue as well, when using the card, Felothar, Dawn of the Abzan in games my opponents are using Spectrum Sentinel to block and I am being forced to assign all damage to Sentinel despite Felothar having trample despite the previous rulings that I've found, I would greatly appreciate if this is fixed soon

Then you don't understand the rules of Magic as well as you think. This IS possible and legal. Protection in regards to damage is a prevention effect. And those do not interfere with combat damage assignment. You assign damage regardless of wether it is going to be prevented or not. So yes, an attacking creature CAN trample over a blocker with protection from it.
