Grim Hireling's effect of creating treasure tokens when dealing combat damage triggers even when combat damage is prevented.
I was playing against a deck that was using Grim Hireling. It attacked and I played Flare of Fortitude in response to prevent all combat damage, but the trigger still fired and they got treasure tokens.

Grim Hireling DID damage to you. Flare of Fortitude only prevents your life total from changing, it does not prevent damage. The RESULT of damage to you is then simply nothing. That does not change the fact, that combat damage was dealt to you. (See rule 120.4)
