Valgavoth + X spells only allows X=0
STR:
Have Valgavoth in play.
Have an X spell playable from its ability (I had March of Otherworldly Light in Exile from Valgavoth)
Attempt to cast the spell
Actual result: X must be Zero, and you pay 1 life.
Expected Result: you are allowed to choose X, and Valgavoth makes you pay life equal to its cost, including the X.
Note: Tested repeatedly with various targets on the board. Only the 0-cost tokens could be targeted, none of the creatures with MC > 0 could be targeted.

Here's the rule, why this is the case (the alternative cost of paying life does not include X):
107.3b If a player is casting a spell that has an {X} in its mana cost, the value of X isn’t defined by
the text of that spell, and an effect lets that player cast that spell while paying neither its mana
cost nor an alternative cost that includes X, then the only legal choice for X is 0. This doesn’t
apply to effects that only reduce a cost, even if they reduce it to zero. See rule 601, “Casting
Spells.”
