Chosen by valgavoth card states "all damage that would be dealt to you" but the cards and say opponent loses x life still deal damage to the player?

No, they do not deal damage to the player. They cause them to lose life. Entirely different concept. Damage to a player usually CAUSES loss of life, but that is only one way for a player to lose life. Life can be lost without damage.
