untimely malfunction
I cast Untimely Malfunction to redirect Roaring Furnace. I was no able to select any of my opponent creatures. I hit cancel, then the Untimely Malfunction went to my graveyard without doing anything.

You are not taking control of the ability, just trying to change targets. And the only legal targets are creaturers that an opponent of the ability's controller controls. So only your creatures, if any, are legal targets. You have to choose among those. YOUR opponent's creatures are not legal targets.
